I heard on the news this morning that Joe Satriani is going to sue Coldplay for allegedly ripping his riff's on one of there tracks (the name of which slips my mind at this moment!), will he win?

Exactly the same as Satch. I guess when you feel that your creation has been stolen then you must fight for it.

Ok - love Joe (seen him live !) but sorry, I'm not thinking he's going to win this. Couple of notes the same but it's hardly a cover version is it !?

I'm a big fan of Satch, but it's just a coincidence IMO; a fairly standard chord progression which leads instinctively to that melody line.

Two utterly banal "melodies" sound similar shocker. Why would anyone want to publicise that they had written that tosh?

Think about how many tunes are written in the world every day. Sooner or later you are going to get 2 songs with exactly the same basic notes. That's all they are, nothing spectacularly complicated, just something you could easily come with by humming it. Same type of situation as the Infinite monkey theorem which states "that a monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type a given text, such as the complete works of William Shakespeare." Chris Martin, earlier.

Agree with the above.
It won't get anywhere near court, as it happens all the time. Can't see what the problem is really, everyone rips off everyone and its dead easy to write a song that you think is original and then find out its not afterwards.

Skint he isn't. Just protective of his creations as all musicians are.
