I think next year a 360 could well be on the shopping list.

But I started doing the fateful "what if" line of thought!

From mr research it seems these cars are generally very reliable, but has anyone heard of any really bad things going wrong?

What sort of price is an engine / gearbox rebuild?

I guess warranties are a waste of space?

Cheers smile

After 3 and about 40k miles in various 360's not broken any of them (and I have an unnatural ability to break cars!), not a fan of the F1 and what it does for clutch life, but only thing that seems to wear out are the ball joints at around 20-25k miles.

All the early batch of 1999-2000 cars with the duff crank shells would have been replaced by now. Ferrari knew about that problem but it was not a recall. Ferrari used a crank shell with a different tolerance and that sorted the potential problem from that point. These days the engine bottom end is very strong.
Apart from the well known ball joint problem thats been mentioned, (in which you cant just buy the ball joints but the whole wish bone) the 360 is a great car. Clearly a manual is always going to have less problems than a mechanical manual. But even then the F1 system is a good un.
Even then dont spend your life/ownership worrying about what ifs. Just drive and enjoy that MoFo.

Thanks chaps smile

So would you advise a particular independant check of a prospective buy? I hear many clocking stories on the 360!

I've just bought one and apart from a few very minor issues(which are being sorted under warranty) so far it seem's great. I've been speaking to a local independent and most thing seem to be a lot more reasonable than I had been lead to believe.
What does surprise me is how easy they are to drive.

I am getting to the opinion with valuable mileage sensitive cars over say 5 years old and with more than a couple of owners that most have been clocked. When I looked for my 550 I saw a car whose paperwork indicated that its mileage had decreased between 2 invoices and another owner who told me of a summer trip to europe which did not fit with the mileage over that period. So out of 3 cars I went to see 2 had definately been clocked - I bought the one with the highest genuine mileage.

I had an audio man come to do some work to my car and he asked me if I needed the mileage corrected....he then went on to tell me that he did mileage adjustments on a near daily basis mostly on exotica and normally only a few thousand at a time.

I would definately have the car inspected by a respected independent

good luck

I'd agree with that to a point. I've just sold my GT3 to buy a 360 but what the Porsche lacks is soul.
The Porsche is probably better built, faster, handles better, in summary is a better allround car. However it's like going to work in overalls or an Armani suit, you know which one makes sense and is more practical, but you also know which you'd rather wear.
That said I will no doubt have another Porsche one day, but the Ferrari thing is something you have to do!.

Just my humble!

Totally agree. Im lucky enough to own both cars now & ive had them both for about 5 years.. Porsche great every day car & special days. Ferrari special day only. 996 TT 420 BHP with turbos strapped on. 360,, 400 BHP out of the box no billy bolt ons just enginneered to the max.. Back to the question that started before this become a battle of whos cock is bigger,,
Ferrari , ball joints upper & lower. horrid gear change on early F1 boxes , n/s cambelt tentioners crack, ... Porkie still waiting for a prob. Hope this helps..

Thanks for those who gave sensible replies. Shame this thread has headed down hill. I don't care if a porsche is quicker, it's not the reason you buy a Ferrari.

It's probably going to be April when I take the plunge, so I will report back. I will also do a test drive in the next few weeks just to make sure. I've been in an F1 360, but not driven it. I guess that's the next decision. I think manual...

biggrin are you playing again! biggrin

just in case you're not joking, the OP asked if there were any major mechanical faults.

having done 30k in my 360 in just over 2 years i've found it very reliable and lots of fun.
go looking, and when you find one you like get it thoroughly checked and inspected and you should be fine.

just make sure you use it regularly and make the most of the fun you'll have.

* nothing wrong with porsches, just find it odd that there was no mention of Stutgart in the OP's question so wondering why they came up? *
