Powertrain
The ECU for the DSG dual-clutch gearbox can give an incorrect temperature reading and cause the gearbox to disengage drive.
Mechatronic control unit for DSG gearbox fails and is spotted by stalling or stuttering at slow speeds.
Ignition coil packs can fail and cause a misfire. New coil packs are £35 each.
Has cambelt been changed at 75,000 miles or five years?
Rolling chassis
Inspect tread across the width of all four tyres for even wear.
TTs built between May and July 2009 had a recall for a damaged brake servo vacuum pipe. Make sure this is noted in the service history.
Listen for brake squeal that might need new discs and pads.
Rattles from the front end are likely to be worn steering rack mounts and will need replacing.
Body
Check aluminium front wings and bonnet for dents or damage as repairs are expensive.
Check paint finish and for signs of mismatched paint repairs.
Exhaust changes are common, so ensure it's a reputable brand.
Hoods on the Roadster can be slow; as long as it speeds up after a few runs you're fine.
Interior
Wet boot carpet is caused by water dropping in when tailgate is opened. Also sniff for any musty smell in the cabin.
Nappa leather seats wear more quickly than standard leather and Nappa is tricky to replace.
Listen for rattles from the dash. It only affects some cars, so avoid those that do squeak.
