Might be quite good this. After months of speculation and spy shots, Porsche has confirmed a
Cayman GT4
. It goes on sale today, it will be shown to the public at Geneva and expect '911 beater' over many first drives imminently.
385hp and manual only; win and win
The spec is promising to say the least. As expected the engine is derived from the 911 Carrera S unit but makes 385hp, down slightly on the 400 of the 991. Gearbox? Manual and manual only. Yes, really. "Its power is transmitted by a standard six-speed manual gearbox with dynamic engine mounts - there is no PDK transmission option." Cheers Porsche.
Numbers? 4.4 seconds to 62, 183mph all out and 7:40 around the Nordschleife. Oh, and 27.4mpg. It sits 30mm lower than a standard Cayman plus features "components and genetic spirit" shared with the 911 GT3. That chunky rear wing plus front inlets are part of an aero package that is said to create tangible downforce as well as reducing lift. A limited-slip differential is standard fitment with torque vectoring and 20-inch wheels.
Inside are sports seats and a wheel unique to the GT4. Should you fancy the seats can be upgraded to CFRP-shelled buckets. 'Club Sport' is on the extras list too, along with PCCB and a custom Sport Chrono upgrade with the 'Track Precision app'.
Yes, that's fixed and, yes, it's standard
Normally we're guilty of praising Porsche for doing sports car again after churning out hybrids and SUVs. But the GT4 actually is being launched as a commitment to the interesting stuff: "It also makes a clear statement that Porsche will continue to promote radical two-door sports car now and in the future - sports car that are developed at the company's Motorsport department in Weissach." Good news, surely.
As mentioned, the Cayman GT4 is on sale from today. The price is £64,451, £16K more than an S and £11K on top of a GTS. You sense it might be worth that though and it's still £9,000 less than any 911. PH verdict coming just as soon as possible.
