Description
𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀
● 4.7 litre V8 rated at 435hp
● Six-pot Brembo brakes and Skyhook adaptive dampers
● Extensive history
𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄
Introduced in 2003, the fifth generation of Maserati’s luxury saloon, the imaginatively titled Quattroporte (“four door”) was particularly notable for hosting a 4.2-litre V8 engine that was co-developed with Ferrari. A facelift in 2008 introduced the S variant that we see here, with an enlarged 4.7-litre V8 which produced 435hp. This later car also ditched the automated manual gearbox of the early variants in favour of a more traditional (and reliable) six-speed ZF automatic.
With six-pot Brembo brakes and Skyhook adaptive damping, this luxury car comes with sporting credentials and is surely a more glamorous and engaging alternative to the kind of Germanic executive express that one could consider; in Nero Carbonio black, with attractive 20-inch alloys, it still cuts a dash in a way that its contemporaries would struggle to these days.
While it’s true that there are a few cosmetic blemishes, the folder of invoices shows plenty of evidence of the oily bits being looked after. If you’re after space, pace and a fabulous soundtrack, then this is worthy of serious consideration.

𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿
● Inside, red-stitched leather covers the seats and dashboard and combine with Alcantara headlining to produce a sporting luxury ambience
● The seats show remarkably little wear, with just a little patina to the driver’s seat outer bolsters
● There’s a couple of signs of age in here: the panel of three buttons to the right of the steering wheel have come slightly adrift and could use re-fixing and the rear centre console has some marks on the nearside
● As you’d expect from a high-end motor like this, you’re provided with all the toys: heated and electrically adjusted seats, front and rear, air conditioning, cruise control, satellite navigation, to name but a few, and the trademark Maserati analogue clock
● An electric glass sunroof helps to provide some more light
● Usefully on a car of this size, parking sensors are provided front and rear, although the owner tells us that the rears can be a little intermittent
● The boot is suitably cavernous and houses a Maserati toolkit under the floor
● Overall, the cabin is a lovely place to be and, while very liveable, would benefit from a couple of small fixes
𝗘𝘅𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿
● With sweeping curves, the post-facelift vertical chromed grille and its sheer physical size, the Quattroporte still has considerable road presence
● Look closely and there are a few areas where the car is starting to show its age a little: there are a few small door dents, a slight crack in the rear bumper and a sticky residue to the right of the rear numberplate, for example
● The Nero Carbonio black paint has been touched up on the sills and there are also signs that the nearside rear door and front bumper have received some paint
● The 20-inch Tridente Mercurio rims complement the body design beautifully and in in generally very good condition, showing only a little light kerbing, while red brake callipers echo the interior red and black theme
● In all, it could use a little TLC here and there but with a little attention, it could be brought back to its best, and it will be well worth the effort
𝗠𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹
● Under the bonnet nestles the 4.7 litre V8 which, while some of the red crackle finish has worn off, is still the beating heart of this car
● Smooth and sonorous, it drives the rear wheels via a six-speed ZF automatic gearbox
● Paddles mounted to the steering column allow the gears to be swapped manually
● Six-pot Brembo brakes at the front provide the kind of stopping power that you need in a car of this power and size
● While the engine alone is almost worth the price of admission, it all adds up to a compelling package
𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘆
This Italian take on the executive saloon has all the right ingredients and would be a lovely thing to own as it stands. With a little attention, it could really be a keeper.
