Overview
In this day and age, a car manufacturer won’t waste the opportunity to get additional exposure by launching the tin-top and convertible versions of a model at the same time. But back in 1996, the convertible version of Jaguar’s long-awaited sequel to the XJS was first shown to the world alongside its coupe sibling. Facelifted in 2003 and in production until 2005, the X100 XK8 and XKR sold over 91,000 units across the world.
To our eyes, it’s aged incredibly well and, in a classic colour combination like this one, they’re a very tempting proposition. With summer just around the corner (if you look at the calendar and ignore the prevailing weather conditions at present), what better time to get behind the wheel of a gorgeous drop top V8 and burble around the countryside?
This post-facelift XK8 convertible has been mechanically very well looked after and, although there are a few areas for improvement on the outside, the interior is very well preserved and features an Apple Carplay stereo upgrade for maximum usability. A reluctant sale, it’s a hit with the owner’s daughter who has begged him not to sell it, mostly for the lovely noise that is makes. With a 305hp V8, we think it would be a great way to enjoy the sunny weather.

Interior
- The two-tone full leather interior is very well preserved for its age and looks just as inviting as a Jaguar cabin should
- There is a significant update in the form of a prominent central screen which features Apple Carplay
- The original stereo and sat nav is provided, should the next owner want to revert to standard and the CD player remains in the boot
- The usual mod cons are present: electric windows, air conditioning, cruise control
- A wind deflector reduces buffeting, while a the original hood cover keeps the hood protected and tidy when it’s down
- The boot contains the original spare and jack
Exterior
- The metallic blue paintwork complements the interior colour scheme beautifully
- The car presents reasonably well with distinctive alloy wheels and paint that has a decent shine to it
- Look closer and there are a few cosmetic issues that would benefit from attention including some corrosion behind the offside rear wheel, a minor parking ding visible on the offside front wing, minor stone chips to the front, a cracked nearside wing mirror cover and various scratches and scrapes to the bumpers
- The alloys show a little kerbing but are in very usable condition with Bridgestone tyres fitted all round
- At the front, the headlights show some fogging, which is not unusual
- The blue hood suits the car well and appears to be free from any tears
- Overall, it’s a lovely looking car which, with a little TLC, could be a real stunner
Mechanical
- 4.2 litre AJ-34 V8 rated at 305hp
- Five speed automatic transmission
- Rear wheel drive
- The owner tells us that it starts without hesitation and drives smoothly and, when asked, quickly!
- As you’d hope, it is accompanied by a classic Jaguar V8 soundtrack which the convertible allows you to be more closely acquainted with
Summary
Arguably, the design of the XK8 gets better with age and the lure of a convertible with a creamy V8 is hard to ignore. This one has seemingly had all the oily bits taken care of and, with some attention to the exterior, should be a fabulous summer cruiser.
