Overview

The 996 represents a watershed moment - pun intended - in the history of the 911 range: the advent of water cooling. This ruffled a few feathers, but at least it meant the 911 could continue into a new millennium full of emissions regulations and noise level tests.

And the Carrera 4S takes power from this new-fangled watery engine - still mounted at the rear, thank heavens - and plants it on the road through an all-wheel drive system. This particular car’s 3.6-litre flat-six engine received an extensive rebuild in 2017, digging as deep down as to fit new crankshaft bearings, as well as rebuilding the cylinder heads and much more.

The car comes with a very well-stamped service record, with work being undertaken by Porsche main dealers and specialists. And having only been driven 32k miles, it remains in very presentable condition inside and out. The bold red leather upholstery just cries out for you to jump in and go for a drive.

Summary

If buying a twenty year old Porsche gives you a few butterflies in your tummy, then this Carrera 4S with its rebuilt engine might just soothe your nerves. It has clearly been well cared for in the past, with an eye on its long-term health, so you can focus on the driving experience.

310hp, all-wheel drive and a Tiptronic gearbox all add up to make this a machine worthy of any winding country lane. The golden sunlight of a summer’s evening dancing on the bright red leather upholstery as you power your way up hill and down dale with the roof down.
