Overview
You could well make an argument for Ford being the greatest performance brand of all time. Without doubt, Ford’s performance models have had the greatest reach and scope of any car company we can think of – from nimble little warm hatches like the XR2 and SportKa, through motorsport heroes like the Escort Cosworth and RS500 to out-and-out supercars such as the GT40 and GT.
If you’re a fan of maximum bang for your buck, you can’t really go wrong with a fast Ford. And when it comes to classic modern hot hatches, the Focus RS is surely one of the best. So it’s with great pleasure that we present this delightful example of the breed. Based on the facelifted Mk2 platform, the RS is an absolute barnstormer of a machine, offering 300bhp from the factory and muscular, motorsport-inspired styling. That five-cylinder turbo gives proper ‘Audi Quattro Group B’ woofles, pops and bangs. It’s the kind of powertrain that makes the hairs on your arms stand up. Add in the Mountune MR420 kit that adorns this car, and you have the kind of hot hatch that words like ‘savage’ and ‘brutal’ were made for.
But don’t make the mistake of thinking this is a boy racer’s car, oh no. This lovely example has been meticulously cared for and immaculately maintained from new. The current owner has been in possession of it since 2013 and lavished it with all manner of enhancements, refining the already excellent recipe that Ford created.
For anyone with even a passing interest in great hot hatches – and being as you’re reading this, we assume that’s you – this simply has to be considered. With genuinely low mileage and a fabulously long list of improvements and maintenance, whether you want something fun for the weekend, a potential show-winner or simply a great example of a classic modern hot hatch, we think this is quite simply perfect.

Interior
- Overall, the cabin feels very sporty, with a hunkered down driving position, and presents in excellent condition for its age
- Optional ‘Dinamica’ black leather Recaro sports seats, with Alcantara centre inserts and contrast blue stitching
- All of the seats are in excellent condition, with no significant wear and no sagging apparent, we only noted some slight wear to the outer bolsters of the driver’s seat
- The driver’s seat is fitted with an uprated JCR lowered seat frame – the passenger side remains on the standard frame, but the lowering frame will be provided with the vehicle
- Black carpets with ‘RS’ overmats, all are in fine fettle with no staining, threading or damage on show
- All of the switchgear and internal trim looks to be in very good order, with no cracking, warping or UV damage we were able to identify
- Lux 1 pack (factory option)
- Dual zone climate control
- Keyless start
- Rear parking sensors
- Sony 6CD system with DAB radio and factory Bluetooth option
- Electric windows and side mirrors
- Automatic headlights and rain-sensing wipers
- Tyre-pressure monitoring system
- Auto-dimming rear view mirror
- The boot is large and neatly trimmed in dark grey carpet, with no staining or damage we could see
Exterior
- The car presents very well, with a great shine and clear evidence of having been pampered
- Performance Blue paintwork looks to have been kept in excellent condition, wearing a deep gloss and minimal signs of wear
- We didn’t notice any lacquer peel, and only a handful or minor blemishes
- There are a couple of chips to the rear off-side wheel arch and the centre of the bonnet’s rear edge, as well as some light stone-chipping to the front bumper and leading edge of the bonnet, but much less than you’d expect for the car’s age
- Mountune mud flaps fitted
- All of the external trim and badging appears to be complete and in superb condition, with no damage apparent
- There is a tiny stone chip on the windscreen around dead centre side to side and just above centre vertically which has had a smart repair; the owner reports that it is still noticeable under close inspection but does not obscure the view out at all
- Otherwise, the glass elements and light lenses all look to be clean and clear, with no evidence of misting, cracking or chipping that we could discern
- Factory bonnet vents, side skirts, wing vents, rear diffuser and large rear wing add a motorsport flavour
- Sequential LED indicators installed to the side mirrors – the originals are available should the new owner wish to have them
- Underneath, the vendor tells us there is some surface corrosion to the subframes and lower suspension components
- The car is booked in with Demon Performance Centre to have the remedial underside work carried out on 9th December with a £500 deposit paid; provided the new owner can make the appointment, this booking can be transferred to the new owner at no extra cost (there is a 12 month wait for this usually)
- 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, finished in shining silver and looking to be in very good order, with just one small chip to the rim of the rear off-side wheel
- Blue anodised locking wheel nuts
- The alloys are shod in a matched set of Michelin PilotSport 4S tyres, which all look to be in very nice condition, with plenty of tread (the owner tells us about 6mm)
Mechanical
- 2,521cc five-cylinder turbocharged engine, driving the front wheels
- Six-speed manual transmission
- Exceptionally clean engine bay, with no evidence of leaks or any other issues we could identify
- Uprated RTS clutch and single mass flywheel fitted in June 2023 at 37,482 miles
- Mountune MR420 kit and tune, which includes a long list of quality performance upgrades
- Replacement hybrid turbo
- MP350/RS500 fuel delivery module
- 750cc fuel injectors
- MP350/RS500 intercooler
- X4 air intake system
- Miltek ‘Mountune’ exhaust system with a 200 cell sports cat
- Mountune ‘Clubsport’ 365mm front brake kit
- Vibra-Technics lower rear engine torque link
- Cast aluminium inlet assembly, complete with a black finish
- The cambelt and waterpump were replaced in October 2020 at 36,998 miles
- The car idles smoothly and sounds absolutely fantastic, revving cleanly with a deep, baritone note to the exhaust
- In standard tune, the car is rated from the factory at 300bhp / 325lb-ft, offering a 0-62mph time of 5.7 seconds and a 163mph top speed
- While we don’t have performance figures for this car, we’d be very surprised if it didn’t fall into the “significantly more than factory” category
- The MOT and service records are excellent, giving clear evidence of the care and attention that has been lavished on the car
- No faults or issues are reported by the vendor, and as can be seen from the video, no warning lights are present on the dashboard
Summary
We love the Mk2 Focus RS. As a usable, every day performance machine, there’s very little that comes close to it. That five-cylinder turbo powertrain is an absolute gem, and with the addition of some fairy-dust from Mountune, it turns into an absolute monster.
It’s rare to find this kind of car with so few miles, just one previous owner, clean HPI and such a meticulous service record. We especially admire the fact that the owner has kept the modifications to performance only, maintaining the stock look of the vehicle but offering a significantly improved driving experience.
Let’s face it, the days of manufacturers producing turbo-nutter hatches that run on dino-juice is severely limited (if not over). So it’s the perfect time to grab a noughties performance hero, after all, they’re only going to get more collectible and desirable as the electrons take over…
