Overview

The Maserati GranTurismo Sport was developed in record time, which was nothing short of a miracle, and we love it as a result.

The replacement for the celebrated Maserati GT had begun development in the early 2000s using a new spaceframe chassis. But this was expensive, so it was decided that the new car should be sold by Ferrari instead. As a result, Ferrari got its new California pretty much off-the-peg, and it’s no coincidence that the domed roof and curved rear pillar have a distinct Maserati-eque look about them.

But Maserati itself was left with no GT in its line-up. The survival of the marque was on a knife-edge. They had the Quattroporte saloon, but a new model was needed – and time wasn’t a luxury that Maserati had.

At the start of 2007, Pininfarina was brought in, to help with the styling, design and development of an all-new coupe to be based on the Quattroporte platform. And by September the same year, the new GTS was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The car had gone from conception to launch in just nine months, which is regarded as an industry record. as well as being the car that saved Maserati.

But it wasn’t just thrown together. Admittedly, the GTS has a few quirks, but no more than you find (and forgive) in almost any Italian performance car. What’s truly important is that the GTS is a visually breathtaking rear-wheel-drive coupe with a Ferrari V8 under the bonnet.

It wasn’t just a one-way deal though. Ferrari got a complete car out of Maserati, but Maserati then received a Ferrari engine to play with. The F136 V8 was initially offered in 4.2-litre form, with 395bhp, before a 4.7-litre variant with 436bhp came along in the 2008 GTS – which is what you’ll find under the bonnet of this 2010 example.

It’s a low mileage Maserati GTS with the big block version of the F136, and a Graziano ‘MC-Shift’ automated manual transmission mounted in a rear transaxle arrangement. The vendor has owned and enjoyed the car for the past three years, but fancies something different, meaning here’s your chance to own a GTS in a black colour scheme.

It’s a fantastic machine, and achingly cool.

Summary

Admit it – there aren’t many things cooler than a black Maserati – a car that marks you out not only as a petrolhead, but as someone with discretion, taste and a fondness for fine automobiles, with a touch of flair.

This is a deeply desirable car, it looks amazing, sounds fantastic and has clearly been well-looked-after. And you won’t forget that it has a Ferrari engine.
