Porsche 356A 1600S Convertible D LHD

The successor to the widely acclaimed 356 Speedster, Porsche’s Convertible D, premiered just in time for the summer of 1958. It was noticeably less spartan than its predecessor, yet it benefitted from a three-inch taller windshield, roll-up windows, a more robust convertible top, and a more upscale interior.
Two engine options were offered in Porsche 356A. A 1600N (Normal) producing 60hp and the 1600 Super with 75hp. Both were naturally aspirated and of a flat-4 configuration driving the rear wheels through a 4-speed all synchromesh gearbox. The Convertible D benefitted from a new set of creature comforts, yet it still retained all the soul of the outgoing Speedster, resulting in Porsche’s sales literature describing it as “a dynamic car of beautiful proportions. Extra light and low in design for competition and pleasure driving.”
Just 1,331 Convertible Ds were built between August 1958 and September 1959, making it one of the rarest non-motorsports models ever to wear the famous Stuttgart crest. Porsche intended the Convertible D as a true weekend racer, a car which would comfort the driver during the workweek, and then thrill at the track on Saturdays and Sundays. The key to this was a windshield that, once a pair of bolts were loosened, could be completely removed for weight savings and a more dynamic driving experience.
This particular example was first delivered to the United States in 1959 and was specified with the more powerful and desirable Super engine as well as Sealed Beam Headlights, USA Bumpers, Dunlop Tires and Ponto-Stabil Mirror.
It was purchased by its current owner in 2011 and treated to a full nut and bolt restoration with CPR Classic in California. Included in the works was a complete overhaul of the engine and transmission as well as all suspension and braking components. The car underwent a bare metal respray in Guards Red and the interior was fully retrimmed in Tan leather with light brown weaved carpets. Lastly, the car received a new Black convertible hood and all exterior brightwork was refinished.
The car has covered fewer than 1,000 km since the restoration works were completed and presents superbly. The Porsche 356 will never go out of style, and the Convertible D in particular is a rare model that seamlessly bridges the gap between sporting and luxury. This fully restored example would make a very exciting driver for the collector looking for both the fun of a speedster and the creature comforts of a convertible.
