Overview
Old Bentleys have always offered a slightly more accessible route into luxury motoring than their brand new counterparts. And it’s easy to see why you would be tempted to place a bid on this Continental GT: you can get your hands on a 6-litre W12-powered grand tourer without having to remortgage the family estate. And you don’t have to skimp on style either. This early Continental’s sleek lines still look good today, so you won’t be worried about being seen in it.
Enormous 20-inch alloy wheels, deep glossy black paint, and tasteful amounts of chrome trim all help to put this Continental firmly in the ‘elegant’ class of vehicle design. But when you decide to plant your right foot into the carpet, you’ll soon discover just how inelegant this car can be. 522 bhp is a lot of power to play with, so this unashamedly large car can shift itself when required, and the all-wheel drive ensures there’s just the right amount of this inelegance, while remaining refined and purposeful all the time.
And on the inside, it still feels thoroughly modern. It certainly doesn’t have the stuffy atmosphere of a mid-century drinks cabinet. Instead, elegant leather trim with diamond stitching abounds, and the infotainment system places it firmly in the 21st Century. It’s the kind of car you can step into, drive to the south of France, and emerge looking fresh and suave. Perhaps a slight adjustment of your tie after a trip up an alpine pass or two, but nothing more.
So if you’re looking for a smart example of a luxury British motorcar — and specifically one with an enormous amount of power and performance on tap — then this Bentley Continental GT has a lot to offer you.
