Overview

BMW’s ubiquitous X5 is a firmly established part of the automotive scenery, having been around since 1999, and has done sterling work to bring the idea of the luxury sporting SUV into the mainstream. As is to be expected, the range at launch offered a broad spread of spec and power levels, from the utilitarian diesel base models to the surprisingly sporty petrol V8s with their goliath-like motors. And as the models evolved across the generations, one thing came to characterise the X5’s vital ethos above all others: torque.

The car we have for you here is an E70-generation M50d, a machine that serves up a frankly devastating 546lb.ft from just 2000rpm, which sounds like enough to ruck up the tarmac like a ruffled hallway carpet and perhaps even knock the Earth slightly off its axis. How did BMW arrive at this point? By distilling the very nature of what consumers wanted from the X5 (having learned a lot of lessons from the first-gen model), and creating a machine that would, in any other era, have seemed like an impossibility.

You see, the E70 X5 wears a number of hats. It offers a supremely clever technological package, with its xDrive AWD system, and ‘Adaptive Drive’ featuring active roll stabilisation and adaptive shocks. It’s also wonderfully luxurious and well-equipped, thanks to its sumptuously trimmed seats, iDrive and head-up display. And crucially, in M50d form, it serves up improbable performance with relatively decent frugality.

How so? Well, its flagship petrol stablemate, the X5 M, may boast 547bhp and a 0-62mph time of 4.5s, but it also returns a mere 20mpg. And that’s if you’re being careful. The diesel M50d’s 375bhp is, of course, backed up by that massive torque figure and while it accelerates to 62mph in a still-ridiculously-quick 5.1s, it can give you 35mpg+. Makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it? Performance motoring underpinned by intelligence, comfort and usability.

This example is a facelifted final-model-year car, finished in striking triple black, recently serviced and with full history. All the car you could ever need? Quite possibly.

Summary

There’s a lot to be said for stealth, and in a modern world where SUVs seem to make up the majority of the motoring backdrop, a black-on-black X5 is well within its comfort zone slipping unnoticed through the traffic. Oh, but this machine has such hidden depths! All of that power and, most importantly, all of that torque, allow it to do things that many wouldn’t believe a vehicle of this stature would be capable of – a bona fide performance machine that, despite its size, won’t have you visiting the pumps as often as you’d expect. And it doesn’t have to be an everyday hellraiser; it’s equally adept at wafting you around in superlative comfort, its impressive build quality insulating you from the world. Whatever mood you’re in, this M50d can readily accommodate.
