FERRARI SF90 STRADALE
The arrival of the petrol/electric hybrid in the supercar world has enabled some manufacturers to achieve remarkable maximum power outputs in four figures, 1,000PS (986bhp) in the case of Ferrari's SF90 Stradale, surpassing the performance of many of the world's most powerful cars, including Maranello's own LaFerrari. Introduced in 2019, the brand's first plug-in hybrid shares its name with that year's SF90 Formula 1 car, reflecting the 90th anniversary of Scuderia Ferrari
The SF90's power train consists of a mid-mounted 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine producing 762bhp (a development of the F8 Tributo's 3.9-litre unit but with an additional 59bhp) and three electric motors: one for each front wheel providing torque vectoring, and another mounted between the engine and the new eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, which drives all four wheels. Reverse is courtesy of the electric propulsion, there being no such gear in the eight-speed transmission. Electric power is provided by a 7.9kWh battery. In 'Performance Mode' the SF90 can reach 100km/h in 2.5 seconds and 200km/h in 6.7 on its way to a top speed of 340km/h (211mph).
The chassis is composed of aluminium and carbon fibre, and the SF90 weighs in at 1,570kg (dry), some 270kg of that accounted for by the electric propulsion system. The body's shark-like front end is one of the most dramatic-looking there is, while at the rear there is an F1-inspired drag reduction system (DRS), the moving elements being controlled by electric motors. A 16" TFT curved dashboard display keeps the driver informed of the state of the various systems, with many of the associated controls being mounted on the steering wheel, including the 'Manettino'.
The SF90 is truly a momentous achievement, a dual-personality, all-wheel-drive hybrid machine capable of blistering performance or quietly skipping around town with up to 20-miles of pure electric driving.
