Porsche 912

In the early 1960s, Porsche planned to discontinue their 356 model, which would leave the newly introduced 911 model as the company’s sole road production vehicle. Concerned that the price increase of the 911 over the 356 would cost the company sales and narrow its brand appeal, Porsche executives decided to introduce a new four-cylinder entry-level model based on the 911.
The Porsche 912 was introduced in 1965 as a more accessible alternative to the 911. Offering the same timeless design and agile handling but with a smaller, more efficient engine. The 912 was powered by a 1.6L flat-four engine which was derived from the 356SC, delivering a perfectly balanced driving experience that quickly gained a loyal following. In 1966, Porsche produced around 28,000 units of the 912, and today, it remains a sought-after classic thanks to its pure driving feel and iconic looks.
This Porsche 912 was built in January 1966, making it a very early model. Sold by Porsche Jacksonville (USA), it remained in the South East of USA (Florida and Georgia) until 2010 when it was imported into the UK by Mr A Dick of Lanarkshire.
Between 2010 and 2014 Mr Dick had the vehicle restored by Porsche Specialist Roger Bray, with a bare metal respray in Slate Grey (photographic records) and an engine rebuild. The rebuild included a rebore to increase its displacement to 1.9L. In 2014, a pair of overhauled cylinder heads were installed, further contributing to the engine’s performance.
Mr Dick sold the vehicle to Mr West of Chelsea, London in 2018, and Mr West took the car to 912 specialists Revival Cars for further recommissioning. Between 2018 and 2019, the vehicle underwent even more substantial work, with invoices for over £17,000 spent on a raft of improvements including a new inlet manifold, new carburettors, new fuel pump, new brake lines, new exhaust and various supporting components to ensure reliable and responsive performance. That same year the underside was recommissioned to reinforce the car’s structural integrity, ensuring it remains solid and road-ready for years to come.
We bought the vehicle in 2019 for a good client, the third and current UK owner. Since then the car has been stored in a temperature controlled environment, used sparingly, and thanks to the quality of the previous restoration work, has only required servicing.
Before being offered for sale, it underwent a comprehensive vehicle health check, a service, and the paintwork was corrected and detailed, restoring the exterior to a beautiful deep glossy finish.
The car shows 97,000 miles on the odometer, with less than 7,000 miles being covered since the initial restoration & upgrades completed in 2014. It comes with a large folder of history and documentation, including invoices, MOTs, photos and the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.
With tasteful enhancements, a well-documented restoration history, and ongoing maintenance, this 1966 Porsche 912 is a truly standout example – ideal for collectors or anyone seeking a classic Porsche.
