I thought Singapore. They still use old UK plate fonts (as does HK I think) but slightly smaller

Radar will be re-tuned to the more modest end of the spectrum (i.e. CL500) as usual then...in about 2 years time! And allowing for ULEZ factors to bite properly! wink My son tells me that places like Birmingham are about to roll-out such schemes and I can barely contain my saliva! lick

Thank you!
Birmingham are indeed bringing in a clean air zone, but an admin error over the vehicle database or similar hiccup means it will be implemented no sooner than summer next year (rather than January). All 216 CLs though are Euro 4 so, for the moment, will be ok.

We have only one charge exempt vehicle, but as I hope (indeed aim) to not be driving into Birmingham within 2 years or so it’s not a big deal.

(SJ’s comment on the CL colour was, I think, referencing the poor colour match of the car’s rear bumper).

Do you mean that all CLs are at least Euro 4? I would've thought that they are Euro 5 compliant, as is my 2003 M113. Mine doesn't attract ULEZ.

Regarding the colour match on the rear bumper, that is a very impressive spot.

Do we know if JOB still frequents the thread? I’ve just found his slightly tired, pearl blue 300E-24 and wonder if it’s still available? Would he perhaps consider a part-ex on the part-ex?
Message sent on ebay... I removed the listing because of the amount of fruitcakes and lunatics that came thinking they were getting a mint W124 for £1500. It was clearly advertised as a project for a reason, it's not knackered but wants a lot of work doing and I just don't have the time.
This is what is actually making me drag my heals over completing the Barolo W201.

It's very close but I know that will mean that I'm then in the position where I have to make a decision about pricing and selling it. Past experience tells me that is then the signal for every unrealistic dreamer, arm-chair critic or chancer to take centre stage expecting to buy a 30 year old renovated car for £1500.
It's exactly the reason I don't like selling cars that arent in good order. The 300-24 wants a lot of work, a fact I've been more than open about and people seem to think I'm telling them that it would benefit from a top end engine rebuild and a full paint for the fun of it! It's not worth wasting your breath, which is why I like to deal with nice cars. That way you have none of these wildly outrageous expectations to manage and 9 times out of 10 the new owner drives away totally satisfied and has nothing other than routine maintenance to look forward to.

Correct on the Euro classification - I get flummoxed by the differing Euro evolutionary paths of petrol and Diesel engines.

I hate to say it but there are a few bits I could do with off it, so it will probably end up a spares car now.
No sign of the ebay message yet, so thanks for coming back on here, too.

That's a shame, it looks far to good to be parted out, but in reality you are probably doing us both a favour. I love my 190, but I'd love the same again but a bit bigger, with 6 cylinders, a bit tighter handling and hopefully aircon! Your 124 looked just the part!

Out of interest, what spec does yours have? (air con, electric seats, sun roof....?) And whilst we're here, I figured the work to be in the order of (based on the MOT history): 4 springs & shocks, steering damper, 2 x front wheel bearings, leaking rear diff, paint. Is it significantly more to bring to a 'usable daily' condition?
I don't know why that is, unless there's someone else from the thread that messaged on ebay before...

As I've said, I wouldn't press it in to daily use as it is. It has an oil leak from the head gasket (in typical M104 style) and needs a new viscous fan. It's also had non-sportline front springs fitted at some point so it sits up too much at the front. Diff leak is merely a misting on the casing and would be the least of my worries! Other than that, the head gasket and 4 decent tyres, your list is about right. Full paint is really in order too, the bodywork looks ok from 10 feet but there are some really crap previous attempts to freshen it up.

The only issue now is that we've had a few parts off it, so I don't know whether it'll still be of interest. Best to call me and chat it through.

Thanks for the response. Sounds like its a bit more than I can take on at the moment really, especially if other bits have been take off too; I'm only just starting to get on top of getting the 190 to run properly.

In the longer term, i could be interested in taking the engine & box (plus all ancillaries) for an engine swap if that fitted your plans.

Absolutely, I've been told by a pal that a 190E with a manual gearbox and a 3.0 M104 will smoke a 2.5-16...

Heresy, but I'd love to see a properly period modded 190E 3.0-24 with a stainless straight pipe and a six cylinder howl to silence an F80 M3. I'm a proper chav at heart.

R500 (above) rapid transport SUV

And a more sensible 320CDI in LWB format.

Both 5 grand and about 55/57 plate on 100k ish miles.

Years ago, they looked uniquely huge and ugly. With the proliferation of large ugly SUVs these days they don’t look so out of place.

Boring colours but 750i with LPG at £4500 seems OK value.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2019...

Random question: Is the 550i the same 4.8 engine as in the X5 4.8is which just isn't badged as a 550?

No worries mate. I had the advantage of second coffee, was still in bed and had plenty of time as I'm on holiday. Well a working holiday around the house between thunderstorms.
If only I was as observant when I needed to be hahahaha.

You're an E estate V8 owner. I've the CDI, I fancy a change and the A8 D3 diesel or CL500 like in the link are two favs albeit different. What's your thoughts?
I think a CL500 with an LPG kit in it be a fab machine.
I recently sold the E500 to another threadist. (Hope it is running well Rohan!). I am wondering if I did the right thing as I had also spent a small fortune on the usual issues on these cars and I miss it.

I have always liked the cl500 as they are a very handsome car, but like all of these barges they come with significant running costs due to their weight and complexity. I always kept a couple of £thousand tucked just in case:...
The CL would be an amazing car. I have one on my hitlist for the future. An MB Club member has one in a colour called 'Jermaine' (?!) which is a grey/brown/mauve. It looks lovely.

You could always plump for a CLS or a CLK55. The early 208s are particularly handsome, to my eyes.
Hi Tom!
The E500 is behaving itself although the battery drain issue from the past seems to be creeping in. Had the "convenience functions disabled" at startup a couple of times recently. It seems to like a long run on a fairly regular basis! The Dynamic seats are a winner when working.

Seller's remorse- yes, I concur. The W215 CL500 has now gone to my Dad. The S211 E500 is a very good car but the CL trumps it even though it is technically an older design. I drove it a couple of times before it left me after regular use of the E500 and it simply felt like an occasion. ABC reigns over Airmatic in the handling stakes too. The important thing st the end of the day is that getting a baby in and out of the S211 is far easier- and that was the whole point in the first place...

As to CL reliability, well yes, definitely keep money aside for problems but I have to say, in 20,000 miles full-on use not much went wrong. The worst was a leak with the ABC suspension that was traced to a front valve block seal, not at all ruinous to fix. If anyone is looking to buy one, condition and evidence of previous high maintenance standards are what to buy on, not mileage. Even with the bigger issues such as the ABC pump failure they are far cheaper to fix than say 10 years ago.

If you are all talking about the W216 then I have no idea- I would expect it to be superior, although I did read somewhere the 215 is a couple of dB quieter inside, oddly.

I had a new e class as a hire car this week.

E220D, 4 matic.

Lots of cool, yet unnecessary technology, gearbox was really nice of a little hesitant upon acceleration (in comfort mode), but my god it was noisy, I needed the phone on full volume to be able to hear and have a conversation.

An ok car, I’m guessing circa £45-50k, no chance.
