Gutted, lost my old green paper one, I know it's in the house somewhere but I have a holiday coming up so had to order a new one while there's still time. Been selo-taping it back together for years but now those Lizard illuminati bds have another form of photo ID they can track me with.

It was a sad day when i had to hand in my old paper licence and get the new photocard licence.

The only positive outcome from it was i get to look at my photo.

I love me.

Why did you have to hand it in? There's still no imperative to do so, they are perfectly legal.

I got 3 points last year, sent it off, they scribbled them on and sent it back.

For some reason i thought they were going to scrap the paper licence and make it compulsory to have the photo one , thinking about it now im not entirely sure why i thought that.

Rather than take any chances i just got the photo licence, but wish i hand not bothered now. My old paper licence had not seen the light of day for over 20 years and was immaculate.

A lot of people got confused when the paper counterpart to the photocard licence was abolished.

Curtain call for the old style paper licence is 19th January 2033 to comply with the EU Third Directive.

The Road Safety Act 2006 Section 39 inserted a new Section 98A into RTA 1988 giving the Secretary of State powers to issue a compulsory recall at any time.

As yet, no S.I. for its commencement has been passed. Can't see it happening any time soon. Parliament has more pressing issues to deal with.

I've had my paper one for 29 years - I see no reason to change it unless I move house

I will get a photocard one when I am 70 - that way it doesn't cost me anything to renew it every 3 years

Made me laugh today I had to withdraw some money from a passbook savings account

cashier asked me for ID

I gave her my DL

she was happy

how is that ID? I asked

she replied "rules just say I have to ask for ID - DL is one of the acceptable forms of ID - even if it's a paper one in 8 bits with no photo"

In 2011, as part of the announcements that the counterpart was being abolished, the DfT said they would be recalling all paper licences - but the idea was quietly dropped.

Dad still has his old green paper one & not a photocard one. No intention of getting one either. Used it in USA many years ago & they had no idea what it was.

I used my paper one 2 weeks ago in the US and it wasn't questioned.

Why would you care what your licence is made from?

Plastic or paper, I really dont care.

I sympathise OP, I still have my paper licence and like yours is sellotaped together and looks rather sorry for itself but I do take it everywhere with me.

Will lose it in 3 years or so time frown

I still have my first little red book licence issued in 1970, found it tucked away in a drawer a couple of years ago.

Well for one, you didn't have to renew your paper licence every 10 years for £21.50 (currently), plus the cost of the photos.

I did mine two weeks ago, it was £14.

When were these paper licences last issued?
