You’ll probably not need much reminding of the Cyan Volvo P1800; even with the restomod scene booming, the combination of a touring car engine with that beautiful shape and the unerring attention to detail of a motorsport team made for an awesome classic.
Now, more than three years since that first P1800 was shown (and presumably with them all now spoken for), Cyan Racing has announced a new GT version. Fundamentally it’s very similar, using the same 2.0-litre turbo engine, five-speed Holinger manual and sub-tonne carbon/steel body. However, as the name implies, this P1800 aims to be a more relaxing experience than the original road racer. And less blue.
Notable tweaks for the GT include the adjustable suspension ‘set up for winding country roads and inspiring but comfortable long-distance driving’. Additionally, the titanium roll cage has been adjusted ‘for increased comfort’ (so it’s now upholstered, and impacts less on the space behind the seats).
The four-cylinder turbo has been modified with a focus on ‘drivability rather than raw power’, so expect a little more torque than the original P1800. Hardly going to be slow, however, as those who’ve already specced GTs have anywhere between 350hp and 420hp. More than plenty in a tonne or so of car.
As it was previously, this restomod is customisable to a client’s every request. Pictured is one of the first GTs, headed for the USA. Cyan Racing hasn’t specified which green this is (please say if you know!), though it works a treat with the gold wheels and sand leather. Also fitted here are a bit of extra sound deadening and less aggressive seats compared to the non-GT P1800.
Predictably, Cyan Racing will be making very few of these lovely things - ‘limited production’ is the exact phrase - from its Gothenburg HQ, with each GT taking around 12-15 months from the first stripping down of a donor P1800. Good things come to those who wait, after all. Price? Only those in the fortunate position to be buying one will know that. But what a thing - next stop ES shooting brake, right?
