There’s a real buzz around MG Motor at the moment – in a good way, we should clarify. We’re not talking about a fried inverter or a loose bit of trim. We mean about the quality and value of the models it’s currently fielding, along with the models it’s readying in the background. The Cyberster two-seater convertible is one of the potential stars of the future, for instance, which is being shown at the Goodwood FoS, while the MG4 Trophy is one that you can buy today. Mike found fond words for that, such as it’s a ‘genuine hoot to drive’.
There’s more, too. MG Motor has just announced pricing for the MG4 EV Xpower in the UK, which will be its most powerful production car to date. With twin motors and all-wheel drive, it’s properly powerful, delivering 435hp and 443lb ft, so it’ll hit 0-62mph in just 3.8 seconds. Yet, when it arrives on the shelves later this month, it’ll cost £36,495 – no doubt with all the mod cons included. It’s not only a performance upgrade, though, because it comes with 25 per cent stiffer suspension thanks to a ‘comprehensive series of suspension upgrades’ that includes recalibrated springs and dampers, beefier anti-roll bars and sharper steering.
And if that’s still not wetted your whistle, there’s more. And by more, we mean something that sounds a bit special – the sort of thing that might be the final nail in the coffin of Chinese MG’s underwhelming image; something to stick it back on the map big time. If we say it’s being touted as a reimagined Metro 6R4, hopefully you get where we're coming from. It’s confirmed only as a concept at this stage, and underpinning it is the same drivetrain and Modular Scalable Platform as the MG4 EV Xpower. It’ll be wearing proudly a ‘distinctive livery designed especially for Goodwood and celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Metro 6R4’.
Come on, even the most diehard cynics among you must see some joy in that? And the more love it gets, surely the more chance there is of it going into production. Still a no? Well, look, we aim to please here at PH. If you’re still unimpressed, then have a look at the MST 6R4 we brought to your attention earlier in the year. There you go, something for everyone.
