Voting for the inaugural Auction Photographer of the Year award is now closed, so it’s time to announce the winner. Safe to say it was mighty close, and it’s not hard to see why given the calibre of our nominees - but hundreds of you to the trouble to have your say on which person and car combo deserves top honours. Kudos then to Aaron James and his snaps of the Porsche 911 Outlaw - you sir are officially the Auction Photographer of the Year for 2024! Huzzah!
As subjects go, they don’t come much cooler than the home-brewed, 996-based Outlaw that went under the hammer back in April. Needless to say it caught the attention of everyone in PH towers, not only for the mishmash of bodywork, stripped-out interior and the (possibly foreboding) ‘fragile’ sticker on front bumper, but also for Aaron’s skill in expertly capturing the no-sods given character of this Magnus Walker-inspired 911.
So the plaudits (and some PH swag) go to Aaron, but any of our runner-ups would have been worthy winners. We had a superbly-specced Mercedes-AMG C63 Estate shot by Jathu Thillai, a very tidy Lotus Elise S1 snapped by Dan Sherwood, the Matt Nolan-papped Renaultsport Clio 182 Trophy, an Audi R8 V8 (manual) photographed by Jack Howells and the BMW Z3 M Coupe shot at sunset by Oliver Brockwell. All stunning photos that we’ve spent many hours ogling over throughout the year.
And let’s face it - most of us have been doing just that on the PistonHeads' classifieds for two decades; occasionally with serious intent to buy, but more often than not just for a car porn fix. Now, thanks to the very high standards for our auction photography, the listings really are X-rated. As a buyer don’t forget you get 150+ beautifully shot detailed images, to give you the confidence to bid without the need to see the car in person and imagine yourself in the driver’s seat. As a seller, you get a professional set of photographs of your pride and joy to cherish for years to come.
This is why you won’t find a few blurry smartphone photos on a driveway with bins in the background and half a finger over the lens here. Our photographers, available nationwide, are all pros – keeping the car the centre of attention, but utilising the location, weather conditions and surroundings to create the best listings that have ever graced the PistonHeads' marketplace.
Obviously there was only space for one on the top step of the podium - and we couldn’t include all of them in the nomination process - but thanks again to every one of our hard-working snappers for your exceptional work this year.
