Enthusiastic motorists have snapped up an incredible £2.7 million worth of
registrations since the new style (‘51’ series) was released by DVLA on the
8th May. This takes the total income for the Treasury from registration sales to
£543 million.
Although the new style numbers will not be seen on the roads until 1
September, DVLA’s telesales business sold more than 4,200 registrations
throughout May and June indicating that the new style marks have become just as
popular as the older prefix registrations.
In the first month of sales, motorists were given the unique opportunity of
choosing from most of the new numbers in the first series and although the
choice is now more defined, approximately 1.2 million new style marks are still
available for purchase.
The new registrations comprise two letters followed by two figures and then
three more letters. The first series features the number 51, which denotes the
six month registration period between 1st September 2001 and 28th February 2002.
Louise Pierpoint, Publicity Manager for DVLA Personalised Numbers, said:
"It is still early days but there is clearly a lot of interest in new
style registrations. Along with the prefix style plates, the new style numbers
are set to continue attracting individuals wanting to add a personal touch to
their vehicles."
Prices for the new style personalised registrations start at £499 including
VAT and assignment fee. Don't forget there are now even more stringent rules
governing the display of numbers though, making some potentially attractive
purchases worthless.
