It's thankfully very seldom we have to report on the death of a racing driver. Even rarer are the instances when driving isn't involved. But this morning the news has emerged that former Marussia F1 test driver Maria de Villota has died.
She was found in a hotel room in Seville, where she was said to have been writing her autobiography. You may remember De Villota was involved in a testing crash last year in which she lost an eye.
Tributes have already been paid to 33 year-old de Villota, who had previously raced in the WTCC and Superleague Formula. An official release from Mercedes stated: "Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Maria de Villota following the tragic news of her passing.
Her courage, determination and hope were an example and inspiration to many. She will be sadly missed by our sport."
As further information surfaces, we'll be sure to update the story. For now, PistonHeads must echo the above sentiments and extend our sincerest condolences to Maria de Villota's friends and family.
