A woman from Midlothian who complained about a knob gag in an MG Rover banner
advert has had her complaint dismissed.
The advert which appeared on the NTL homepage featured a woman's hand
gripping a handbrake and stated "Ever been complimented on your
handling? www.mgcars.co.uk". The complainant objected that the use of
suggestive sexual imagery was gratuitous and offensive.
MG Rover said the straplines used in the range of adverts were cheeky double
entendres in the spirit of 'Carry On' films and argued that such humour
was commonplace and the public was familiar with it.
However, despite the ASA's ruling, MG Rover have withdrawn the ad, "out
of respect for the complainant"
