In another big year for automotive anniversaries, there’s one more to consider: 2023 is the 60th year since Bruce McLaren set up his eponymous racing team. Expect plenty from McLaren over the next few months to mark the momentous occasion. For now, before the multi-million pound, limited-run exotica that will likely follow, a birthday present we can all afford: a £40 McLaren Lego Speed Champions double pack.
The 581-piece set features the Solus GT Vision Gran Turismo car (of which 25 V10-engined customer cars will be made) and the F1 LM, also known as the greatest McLaren of all time - no arguments, please. Both have their central driving positions in place (including McLaren-branded minifigures) and all the important details from the real things, a result of the McLaren designers working with their Lego counterparts in Denmark. It’s the first Lego Speed Champions double pack, and follows six previous McLaren cars in the series as well as two Lego Technic models. The F1 LM is 4cm high, 15cm long and 7cm wide; the Solus GT is 4cm high, 16cm long and 8cm wide.
McLaren Automotive’s Chief Designer, Goran Ozbolt, said: “As 2023 marks the 60th anniversary of McLaren and our founder’s passion to create the ultimate supercars, we felt this was the perfect opportunity to come together with Lego and celebrate some of the iconic McLaren road cars whose designs were born of that vision.
“Whatever age you are, you can have fun building and exploring the cars and through that I hope we can inspire future designers and engineers who will help us look to the next 60 years and beyond.” The Lego Speed Champions Mclaren F1 LM and Solus GT are suitable for ages 9+, and is on sale from March 1st. The non-Technic Lego thread is ready and waiting for completed cars…
