Knowing we’re on the look-out for a Porsche 944 in which to invest the editorial ‘shed’ budget, PHer Richard Fox kindly tipped us the wink when he dug up this little beauty on the Volkszone website.
A Grand Prix White 944 Lux from 1984 with indeterminate mileage and only minor scabbiness ticks all the right boxes for us, and we were sorely tempted to drop the vendor ‘larrylamb11’ a tentative email inquiry asap.
However, as we’re rushed off our feet for the next few days readying ourselves for the annual migration south to Le Mans, we thought we’d do the decent thing and offer it up for your perusal instead.
The 944 series was just two years old when this baby was built, so it predates the first model upgrade where the car got new interior panels, larger capacity sump, improved suspension and ‘telephone dial’ wheels. However, this example does have a few tempting upgrades of its own, including the addition of a pair of Cobra buckets and some lightening work in the form of a missing back seat.
Larrylamb’s chatty sales pitch seems pleasantly reassuring, as he skips gaily over the news that his pride and joy ‘doesn’t smoke or really use oil’, and his line about the gearbox whine is probably close enough to ‘they all do that, sir!’ to warrant some careful further probing.
Still, our vendor does say that previous works have included a replacement engine and a gearbox rebuild, so if a buyer can reassure themselves on a few critical points this machine could well be worth a punt as a £795 starting point for a trackable shed... So perhaps we shouldn’t have mentioned it after all!
"This Porsche 944 has done me very well indeed and has been an absolute hoot to drive - anyone that derides these clearly hasn't driven one! Clearly at this price you aren't going to be looking at a show car - this example has seen some use and given excellent service. It has done some miles.... alot of miles... exactly how many is hard to determine as the odometer in the speedo is erratic and doesn't clock up every mile covered.
"Still, it doesn't feel like some worn out intergalactic spaceship and actually drives very well - like I said, I really enjoy driving it. It doesn't smoke or really use oil, doesn't clonk, pull or anything else sinister - you just twist the key and it goes and has been 100% reliable in my ownership.
"The gearbox whines, like alot of them do, but it all works fine as does the clutch which has good bite and feel. The interior has been fitted with a pair of very comfortable Cobra bucket seats and the rear seat back has been removed leaving the lower buckets, other than that, its standard and in fair order, from memory everything works as it should. The sunroof has had the electric motor removed and the catches replaced with the earlier 944 style manual catches - it doesn't seem to leak.
"The bodywork looks good from a few paces away and is solid in all the places where it counts - sills, rear axle mounts, floors etc. are all good. If you get up close there are some more cosmetic scabs here and there, particularly around the rear and the odd dent, the worst being in the bottom of the passenger door (see pictures) - the front driver's side wing has also been replaced at some point and the paint match isn't great. Basically, the bodywork is fair.
"The car rolls on cookie cutter alloys with firestone tyres all round. There is also a Toad immobiliser fitted. There is a massive file of history with the car, with loads of old MOTs, an HPI check (2001 - clear) and invoices galore detailing plenty of work over the years, including an engine replacement, gearbox rebuild, belts, shocks, drive shafts etc etc - it also had new rear wheel bearings, inner and outer, last year and an oil service a month ago, so its ready to go. Basically, it is what it is - a very cheap 944 that you can have some fun with and don't need to be precious about. I have really enjoyed it and would keep it if I could, it has been a superb car and I hope it does the next owner as well as it has done me - any questions just ask.
