Volvo and touring cars goes way further than BTCC wagons, with Polestar fettled S40s and C30s doing the business in Swedish and world touring cars for a while now. Then last year came the announcement that Volvo and Polestar would team up again for
a V8 Supercars effort
This was surely great news for touring car fans; possibly the world's most exciting tin-top series would be bolstered by the arrival of another European interloper, and mighty fine it looked too. It opened up the potential for a road car too of course...
Now we have the first spec details and noise from the V8 to be used in the S60 V8 Supercar. It sounds special even before it's started: 650hp and 487lb ft from a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8 with eight throttle bodies and a 7,500rpm limiter. It's actually based on the 4.4-litre V8 Volvo used in the S80 (plus of course found turbocharged in the Noble M600) but the block and heads are now aluminium amongst what must be a wealth of other tweaks.
The noise is a violent, angry, blaring V8, with hints of the Ferrari 458 to it. We'll hear more when the S60 V8 Supercar completes its first test on Saturday.
Enjoy.
