Following the epic Classic Impreza was always going to be a hard job, and the so-called new-age Bug Eye model was heavily criticised for its looks. But the passage of time and the ease with which that questionable front-end can now be modified has led to a mini-resurgence in the model's popularity with some Subaru fans. Yet prices can be lower than for an equivalent Classic.
Standard UK WRX models had just 215hp whilst output for WRX 300 and WRX STI Prodrive models rose to 261hp. Japanese STI imports however started at 280hp, with the 2002 Impreza S202 STI Type-RA (which boasted 320hp and was limited to just 400 cars) probably the most sought after Bug Eye. As with the Classic Scoob there are numerous tuning options but those aiming for significantly more than 320hp will need to change engine internals.
Demand for this generation is pretty low right now so you can lever a decent discount and if you're bothered about those headlights don't be - tuners can change them for a price.
