While the news won't come as surprise to anyone, the confirmation that a likeable and stylish coupe has met its maker - indirectly replaced by a small SUV - isn't exactly pleasant to report.
This still looks pretty smart, doesn't it?
So yes, production of the VW Scirocco has come to an end, with the last build slots completed and the final cars emerging at dealers. While obviously not a direct replacement, the T-Roc small SUV has taken its spot on the production line.
First seen as that Iroc concept back at the 2006 Paris show, the production car arrived in 2008 to considerable acclaim. Then the R arrived in 2009 and was certainly the best Scirocco from a PH perspective. It may have had less power than a contemporary Golf R but it was also lighter (because of being front-wheel drive) and much more fun as a result.
Now that's no more; while rumours abound of an electric replacement, for now your fast VW thrills can only be found in a Golf GTI of some kind. Which seems kind of a shame.
You could get a Golf; or you could have a 'Roc...
But of course it does also mean that it could be the perfect time to buy a Scirocco. There must surely be deals to be had on cars like this DSG GT with just 100 miles on it; remember this car is based on an older platform and, to be honest, they need to be sold. See as well
this manual R
this 1.4 GT
with less than 2,000 miles and a
white GTS
with 220hp; all 2017 registrations and all at VW dealers - there's surely some business to be done there.
Having been around for nearly a decade there are plenty of older Sciroccos to choose from as well. This 2012 R looks great at less than £15K with the rare manual gearbox, one owner and a full main dealer service history. For half that, this red 200hp GT is available at a VW garage with 74,000 miles and splitting the difference is this 170hp DSG diesel, in the attractive Rising Blue with the big wheels. Not exactly the purist's choice, but it goes to show what's on offer. Certainly if it's taken until now for you to realise a Scirocco is the car you want, you're spoilt for choice!
