Opportunities to pilot any manner of motorised off-road vehicle in this country are somewhat limited, so vociferous is the opposition to any wheeled vehicle and the damage it might cause to our green and pleasant land. There doesn't seem to be that kind of hand-wringing in Russia. Never mind tearing up existing paths, the rather splendid Sherp ATV just batters its own out of forests, swamps, frozen lakes or whatever else gets in its way.
Australians might not give a XXXX for anything other than a cold beer but your average Russian clearly doesn't give one for your namby-pamby concerns about the natural environment either, the promo vid for the Sherp showing its creators taking obvious glee in the amount of vegetation their monster-wheeled, skid-steer ATV can flatten in one pass. You get the impression Vladimir Putin would approve. And if you want to see it in the metal you can pop along to the 39th International Exhibition of Hunting and Fishing in Russia taking place at the end of the month in Moscow, dress code camo trousers, combat knife and no shirt if the president's example is anything to go by.
If not especially sophisticated the Sherp certainly seems effective, its 1.6m high self-inflating tyres able to act as paddles for crossing lakes, clear 1m tall obstacles, scale 45-degree slopes and generally take you anywhere you and your mates fancy going before killing some wildlife. For all the brutality of its terrain chomping abilities the mechanical spec is actually quite modest, power coming from a 1.5-litre Kubota diesel engine with just 44hp. It's pretty light too, weighing just 1,000kg dry according to the vid. Full spec here.
A tip of the hat to PHer Hugh Jarse for bringing this to our attention. And also for his forum username.
