PHer jke11y is clearly not scared of a challenge, having previously purchased a 1966 Mercedes 230SLfrom eBay sight unseen, in 2017 he decided to try his luck once more. This time it was a Smart ForTwo that caught his eye from afar, the perfect car in which to complete a banger rally from Glasgow to the Sahara, raising money for Children's Hospices Across Scotland.
Nevermind getting to Africa, though, disaster struck just 20 miles into his ownership, with a puncture sent him careening across the M40. Undeterred he got the car home, and set about turning it into the ultimate Cozy Coupe. A strip down ensued before the car was reborn in its current state and, with a failed MOT taken in stride, the time to depart on their grand expedition arrived.
Glasgow to Cornwall sounds like enough of a trek in a Smart, but from there they continued on, eventually accomplishing their goal of reaching the Sahara. For the car itself, though, the journey was only just beginning, with a like-minded petrolhead from New Zealand purchasing jke11y's creation to use in the Mongol Rally. The photos posted to their Instagram account (linked in the thread) are really quite something to behold.
So a huge adventure for a tiny car, and an enormous amount of money raised for a very good cause too. You can check out jke11y's original thread here and his JustGiving page (currently standing at 171 per cent of his original goal) here, as well as a video showing the car below. A big doff of the PH cap to all involved.
