Of all the great achievements in Sir Stirling Moss’s 90-year life, you might argue that the most prominent illustration of his talent is the record that stands to this day. Moss’s performance at the 1955 Mille Miglia was exceptional, the then 25-year-old Brit piloting his Mercedes 300 SLR alongside co-driver Denis Jenkinson to a commanding win on streets lined with Italian fans. It’s the stuff of legend, but with nobody having ever beaten the 98.53mph average he set all those years ago, it’s also to remain the event’s benchmark forever more.
Who better to tell the story of that drive than the man himself? Oft described as the greatest driver never to win the Formula 1 World Championship, Moss’s fearlessness was unquestionable. And in his descriptions of the 160mph jumps and tree-lined curves during the terrifyingly dangerous Mille Miglia, you get a sense of his achievement in completing the 992-mile route in just 10 hours and seven minutes. There was no time to rest; every section of the loop from Brescia to Rome and back again was filled with risk.
That’s not to say Moss’s other successes, including three wins at the equally scary Nurburgring 1,000km, are less deserving of our attention. But the events of that fantastic day, when one of motorsport’s most adored drivers won one of its most daunting races in a car so beautiful – well, it’s a story that’s as cemented in time as the record itself. One worth hearing again and again, which is why today, we’re looking back to 2015 when Petrolicious made this stunning film with Moss himself. Over to you, Sir.
