Things are about to get a whole lot more serious at the Gordon Murray Group. With the new T.50 and the more 'affordable’ T.33 already sold out, the legendary designer is now looking to find ways to develop new technologies that can benefit other car manufacturers – and charge them for it.
Hence the creation of Gordon Murray Technology, a new division that will both support the Automotive side of the group and be used to develop electric vehicles for other carmakers. GMT already has a couple of projects in the works around electric SUVs, one of which, the company says, is being built for a “major car manufacturer.” Let the guessing games begin.
An electric SUV might sound like the polar opposite of what Gordon Murray stands for - this is a man who goes to great lengths to find the lightest hi-fi systems available for his cars, after all - but the same seven core principles used by the Automotive division will be adopted for GMT. So think driving perfection, performance through light-weighting, engineering excellence, sustainable mobility, disruptive technologies, low energy solutions and innovation by design.
It goes without saying that Murray thinks the strategy is an essential step for the group to move forwards. “Our major growth opportunity now lies with Gordon Murray Technology”, he says. “We have a best-in-class highly talented team, capable of working with a global client base, transforming electric vehicles, connectivity and, eventually, autonomous transportation.”
The new division means the whole group has undergone a bit of a reshuffle. Murray, formerly the head of GMG, will now take up the role of executive chairman, overseeing development and design of all products across the business. The CEO seat will be filled by Philip Lee, who’s resume includes a stint at Lotus before joining the Gordon Murray Group in 2020.
Still, Murray seems as hungry as ever to prove himself with a new vehicle concept. He says “people will reconsider what electric vehicles are capable of” with the firm’s new EV projects, but he also teased “a lot more exciting news to come” from the side of the company that makes beautiful and very shouty V12 supercars. Something else to look forward to then.
