Credit where it's due to Abarth, the return of the 124 Spider has not been a quiet one. The roadgoing car is loud both visually and aurally, gurgling along like a very angry barchetta. The brand was given further credibility amongst enthusiasts with the development of an R-GT rally car, and now we have this, a rather aggressive track version.
Conjecture around this 124 has suggested this car is one of two things: either it's a one make race car, a 124 GT to race against dozens of others similar vehicles, or it's fully fledged 124 GT4 racer - one to compete with Aston Martin, Audi, Mercedes-AMG and Porsche.
Certainly it looks pretty pugnacious as a prototype, with extreme spoilers, wings and diffusers, plus the de rigueur front arch vents. It sounds rather more unassuming though, the four-cylinder drawl rather outdone by the six-cylinder Porsches and Renaults also testing at the time. The video poster suggests it might be using the same Alfa 4C-derived engine as used in the rally car, with in the region of 400hp. Bear in mind a Cayman GT4 Clubsport has 385hp (with a 1,300kg kerbweight) and you can see how an Alfa-engined Abarth could be competitive.
With the car still unofficial, there's not a lot else to say for now, other than the 124 looks rather fast and very good fun. Would it be your GT4 vehicle of choice? Or could it be a one-make series you would seek out to watch? All thoughts and opinions are welcome...
