It’s hard to imagine wanting for very much more from the standard Bugatti Tourbillon, what with the 9,000rpm V16, a trio of electric motors and 1,800hp. But Bugatti customers aren’t known for slumming it with standard spec, and Molsheim, like any other maker of cars for the one percent, is more than happy to indulge their demands - so now there’s a Equipe Pur Sang option for its latest hypercar.
Bugatti says the package ‘pays emphatic visual testament to the Tourbillon’s incomparable performance and Bugatti’s motorsport history’. So there are eight exhausts, of course. The custom octet of pipes is genuine and sits alongside a new diffuser, for better aero performance and ‘an even more purposeful stance’. You don’t say.
Just in case the introduction of a purpose-built, Cannonball Run-style exhaust fails to make an impression on passersby, there is also the prospect of new 20-inch front and 21-inch rear wheels, with different ‘characterisations’ either side and a design said to increase the air flow to the rear radiator by eight per cent. And the more cooling the better, presumably, for a many-cylindered Tourbillon.
Elsewhere in the Pur Sangs you get the Performance Seat, finished in Alcantara for a ‘simultaneously sporting and sophisticated’ interior. There’s also exquisite - their words, not ours - embroidery plus additional carbon fibre. On top of whatever personalisation choices the customer has already plumped for. Safe to say that no two Pur Sang Tourbillons will leave Molsheim looking the same, especially with 23 new paint colours, 20 new leathers and even seven fresh carpet options.
The motorsport influence and competition package vibe do extend to more than just Bugatti logos on the headrest, with a new front splitter and rear wing with endplates. Aero efficiency is said to be improved, while also ‘attesting to the Tourbillon’s incomparable handling and performance characteristics’. If it were possible, too, it’s made the Tourbillon look even more like the track car of a comic book villain. And that’s tremendous to see.
Bugatti’s MD Henrik Malinowski said: "With each new era of Bugatti, we seek to honor our heritage while pushing the boundaries of what's possible. The Tourbillon already represents an unprecedented fusion of naturally aspirated power and electrification – a hyper sports car conceived for eternity. With the Équipe Pur Sang option, we elevate its appearance towards the track, enabling customers to celebrate the pure racing soul that has defined Bugatti for over a century." Best hope the eight pipes pass the noise limit at your local track day…
