There’s been so much talk about the new Scirocco this week we thought it only fitting to dig one out for Shed of the Week. To be honest there are so many to choose from, and prices are so low, that there’s probably dozens better and worse than this popping up all the time.
However this could be yours for as little as £400, which let’s face it is nothing these days.Let’s start with the styling of the Scirocco. This was the Mk2 version, with the Mk1 proving very desirable these days, and if you’d be forgiven for thinking that the styling looks somewhat familiar.
The original Scirocco had been penned by Giorgio Giugiaro, who also happened to design the Isuzu Piazza, another stylish coupe/hatch. VW redesigned the MK1 in-house to create the MK2, which appeared in 1982, a year after the Piazza, which looked pretty much the same. Before all this of course Giugiaro had designed the De Lorean, which if you squint a bit looks like Scirocco as well, and a bit like a Piazza.
So the bottom line is after all this did the MK2 Scirocco actually look any good? Er, well it’s never been the best proportioned car in the world and became rather unloved in the nineties, gaining a tag rather like a German Ford Capri. But like the Capri the bad times seem to be behind it and on a wave of nostalgia, and with a pair of Ray Ban rose-tinted sunglasses firmly in place, the Scirocco seems to have become rather cool.
Prices are not exactly rocketing but decent examples of the MK2 are out of Shed’s £1,000 theoretical budget, which is not bad going. Underneath all of this of course was Golf MK1 bits and later MK2 16v engines, so you couldn’t really go wrong.
In the end the Scirocco stepped aside for the Corrado, which was based on the MK2 Golf and rode the wave of the affordable coupe revival. Take a look at the Scirocco we’ve found here. It’s white (which is the new white apparently), has 112,500 miles and a year’s MOT.
For some reason I am looking at the picture and wanting to take this thing for a B road blast. It just looks right for some reason - simple motoring for peanuts. And don’t get me wrong it could fall to bits tomorrow but my experience of eighties VWs suggests this car will keep on going for a very long time. Plus look at the extras list, it comes from the good old days when fog lights, radio/cassettes and spoilers were a selling point.
I don’t know why but I want it…
