As you'll know by now, the Porsche 911 GT3 doesn't play the numbers game. It's ridiculous but true that the 4.0-litre's 510hp isn't much to brag about these days. There are faster supercars if you want to win a game of Top Trumps or a drag race - but, of course, that's missing the point. The GT3 is built to go racing and, as a result, that gives the road cars a level of credibility that many rivals don't live up to. It also infuses the GT3 with a tactility that can't be quantified in stark, objective terms. It gives the GT3 a soul. Particularly at 9,000rpm...
What the GT3 is not, is discreet. A road car with a huge swan-neck rear wing isn't for everyone, which is where this second-generation GT3 with Touring Package comes in. All the character and crescendo of the regular, winged GT3, but with a less shouty look. Losing the rear wing means the downforce drops from 80kg at 124mph to just 15kg, but who cares - that's no great loss on the road. And even if you do venture on track, everything else is the same: the same underbody aero components; the same immediacy of the ball-jointed double wishbone front end; the same composure generated but its multi-link rear axle; the same weight-reducing components to match the track-orientated car's 1418kg kerb weight. To all intents and purposes the same, then.
Or is it? The 992 GT3 has been described as too track-oriented by some, but we've already posted a review of the GT3 Touring that explains why that's not an inherent trait - and why it's still a fabulous road car. But it's one thing reading about it and quite another experiencing a GT3 at full chat. Few will be lucky enough, of course, which makes a video the next best thing...
