Nothing like kicking the New Year with some good news, is there? And news doesn't come any better than the opportunity to buy a Mercedes G-Wagen for less than €20,000. A Swiss Army G-Wagen no less, and sold to you by Mercedes tuner and specialist Lorinser, one of a few garages to carry the prestigious 'Mercedes-Classic Partner' status. A seller to place faith in, basically, and not a Hermann Hermann-style character selling surplus on eBay...
Lorinser doesn't state quite how many G-Wagens it has, it just indicates that "numerous" vehicles are available, with all sorts of specs: four seats, eight seats, soft top, hard top, long wheelbase, regular wheelbase... Nobody will want for choice, it seems. While they vary in age (from the 1990 to 1996 model year) and mileage (45,000 to 200,000 kilometres), every G offered by the tuner comes with a four-speed automatic gearbox and the 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine. Depending on spec and condition, prices are from €15,200 to €19,500; for another €4,000, Lorisner will kit your G out with a rear diff lock, 16-inch Dotz off road wheels and off road tyres, which sounds like a bargain. Don't pretend like you wouldn't enjoy careering around the lanes in an army-grade G-Wagen...
But for those for whom the military chic is bit too, well, military, Lorinser is also offering an "extravagant" restomod package for the Gs. Said to be ideal for "anyone who loves purist off-road vehicles but it not too fond of the used look and camouflage paint", it will refurbish that paint (green and beige are seen in the pics) and fit a hot of modern equipment like LED lights, a cable winch, the off-road wheels and a new interior. They'll even dry ice blast the car and liberally apply the underseal, to keep it "fun to drive for many more decades". Again, it's a very hard proposition to argue with, particularly with prices starting at less than €50,000. If nothing else, it should be a fun journey home from Waiblingen...
