Interesting though Akrapovic's new pipes for the GR Yaris were, the fact that the titanium exhaust wasn't homologated for road use did limit its validity somewhat. Even a track car build has to reach the circuit at some point. This is much more like it: the new titanium 'Slip-On Line' for all G8x M3 and M4 models, including xDrive and Convertible.
As well as taking 8kg from the standard exhaust, a saving of 35 per cent, this new Akrapovic system adds another 10hp at 6,000rpm and 10hp at 5,000rpm. That's according to the Akrapovic dyno against a standard Competition. Obviously these aren't enormous gains for a 510hp, 1,700kg car, but this is without so much as a remap alongside and with the petrol particulate filter still in place for ECE approval. Purely in getting that exhaust gas out more efficiently, Akrapovic has found another few horsepower from a car already with a specific output of 170hp/litre. So imagine what might happen with some extra upgrades...
That said, the appeal of an Akrapovic exhaust has been as much in the sound improvement as the empirical gains. We get a preview of it in this video, the S58 turbo 3.0 louder, rowdier, and with more than a hint of the iconic Japanese straight sixes in the way it rasps to 7,200rpm. Hopefully the driver gets to hear it, too, the standard Competition's soundtrack relying too heavily on manufactured sound. The promise is of "a perfect sound at all rpms", with "a rich tone at normal cruising, rising to a deep sporty sound when the M3/M4 is driven more dynamically."
It wouldn't be an Akra exhaust without something nice to gawp at, either. In this instance it's the carbon tailpipe set that's also available alongside the exhaust, here in an octagonal design for the first time. (A regular cylindrical option is there for those who find the grille and the new noise shouty enough.) A full carbon diffuser is even being offered, to best show off the pipes.
A price hasn't been announced from Akrapovic, but good exhausts never did come cheap. And we all know how popular a rude set of pipes was on the old turbocharged cars, so expect to see (and hear) a few on new M4s soon. One listen here to the comparison with stock ought to do the trick for many. And let's hope it fits the Touring...
