Following the lead of the
regular Golf update
a little while back, the flagship R receives sharper styling (courtesy of new lights front and rear and updated bumpers) and will most likely come with a fancier (and more high tech) interior as well. Of course it's not a transformative change, but it should keep the Golf fresh in the face of newer rivals.
Of more significance - just - are the changes underneath, the EA888 2.0-litre turbo now producing another 10hp (contain your excitement) for a total of 310, plus a torque boost of 15lb ft for a peak figure of 295lb ft. Again a six-speed manual is standard on the hatch, with the DSG option updated to a new seven-speed unit. VW is claiming a fastest 0-62mph time of 4.6 seconds.
Otherwise it's as you were for the Golf R, with the estate also getting the same raft of updates. Prices for the UK haven't yet been announced (or lease deals for that matter), but in Germany the range starts at 40,675 euros for the manual hatch and the wagon comes in at 44,800 euros.
