This weekend is Nurburgring 24-Hour weekend; for fans of endurance racing, of the Nordschleife and of sausage, it is the best weekend of the year. Even if you're just quite into motorsport, N24 promises to be the most incredible few days. To see GT3 cars on such an intimidating circuit is one thing, but to see them battling with dozens of other cars and in an atmosphere as intoxicating as the Nurburgring on 24-Hour weekend, is an experience like no other. You must go if you haven't already.
Enough of the spectator's view though; here's what N24 looks like from a driver's perspective, specifically Gerwin Schuring during the 2016 race. He's driving one of the Black Falcon AMG GT3s, in case you couldn't tell from that thunderous V8 rumble.
It's an incredible lap to watch, not dissimilar to a horror movie because you just don't know what's going to leap out of the dark next. See, for example, the yellow flag at the Foxhole (one of the fastest parts of the circuit) which warns of a recovery truck. Parked at Adenauer Forst, picking up a crashed car. Why stop the race, after all, when you could just put lights on the truck and send it onto the circuit?
Moreover, once you're into the North Loop, there's next to no light. The vid description concedes that the GoPro doesn't pick up all the light that was there, but it's still terrifyingly dark. Watch the run through Kesselchen for proof of that, as the two AMGs seemingly tear into the abyss at 150mph. Madness. Add into that having to older and much slower cars, on top of the challenge of the track as it is, and the video is just staggering.
To all those going to the 'ring this weekend, have an incredible time - you'll love it. But just remember, if it looks difficult watching from behind the fence, here's proof that the N24 is probably even more challenging than it seems!
