Think of a Mugen Civic and it's never going to be something shy or retiring. It might be the wild, £40,000 rev-addicted maniac that Honda commissioned about a decade ago; it might be the pirate's favourite, the Mugen Type RR, a four-door Civic that used carbon fibre buckets to elevate it above a regular FD2 Type R; or it might be a mad 90s' project that graced a magazine cover. Whatever the case, a Mugen-modified Civic is unmistakeable - and that isn't changing any time soon...
This is Mugen's latest range of parts for the Civic Type R, available through Torque GT, and they're just as mad as we've come to expect. However, don't mistake these as simply attention-grabbing add-ons; both carbon bonnet and spoiler have been rigorously tested, and are said deliver a discernible benefit.
The bonnet has improved aerodynamic performance over the standard one thanks to an adjusted shape as well as the size and position of the air outlet. That's before factoring in the obvious weight saving a dry carbon bonnet offers versus a conventionally made one. And all the kudos from a genuine carbon hood, of course...
Some have been disappointed that the new Civic Type R's Sport Line has revealed no requirement for the standard car's spoiler - because it does without, yet retains the same aero stability. Those after a wing with proper influence (and adjustability) should check out the Mugen option. Again analysed for optimum height, angle and cross-section shape, the new carbon spoiler is said to increase the CLR value (rear lift coefficient) without increasing drag. More downforce can be dialled in by adjusting the angle of the of the spoiler in four stages. And don't pretend like you wouldn't want to be adjusting the angle of your carbon Civic Type R spoiler.
Now, exotic materials produced by long-established and renowned manufacturers are not going to come cheap. So best sit down. The carbon bonnet will cost £11,834.68, and the spoiler £10,651.21, which it's hard to imagine many UK buyers taking Mugen up on. And that's before getting to the wheels or any other Civic add-ons - see the Mugen website for more information on those. That said, Mugen Civics have never made rational sense, and that's exactly why we're glad they continue to thrive; whenever it seems Honda has gone a bit mad, Mugen goes 39 steps madder still. We can't wait to see what they do with the facelifted 2020 range...
